As a former Department of Physics at Faculty of Pedagogy, and later at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Physics combines long tradition and experience in education of physics and mathematics teachers with respectable scientific research. First four-year study of educational mathematics and physics was established in Rijeka in 1964 as an initiative of eminent physicist Prof. Dr. Branimir Marković.

Teaching is organized through a three-year undergraduate study of physics and five streams of two-year graduate studies. Department of Physics also actively participates in teaching physics at other faculties of University of Rijeka and is taking part in lifelong education programs.

Scientific research includes various fields of theoretical and experimental physics ranging from condensed matter physics, astrophysics, nuclear and molecular physics to elementary particle physics, environmental physics, and educational physics.
